Beach Week

9 Jul

Ryan and I spent all of last week at the beach with my family, minus Gray (who was on a mission trip to Mexico). The beach is my happy place and it was pure bliss to be there for a whole week!

The first couple of days, I was sporting my Rifle Paper Tattly Tat from Katie Meek. I enjoyed three books while I was there. The first was “Cold Tangerines” by Shauna Niequist. I really enjoyed the way that she writes and celebrates life. The second was a suggested beach read at Barnes and Noble, “Where’d You Go, Bernadette” by Maria Semple. It is very quirky, but fun to read at the beach. The third was “Wife School” by Julie Gordon. This book has already been so helpful since I finished it a couple days ago. There are some great principles defined in a way that is so easy to ingest.

One of my favorite parts of this trip was riding around in my dad’s jeep with the top off. We also got some funny shots with the Go Pro. This is just a photo taken from a very interesting video…. Hopefully I will be able to share it soon!jeep

My dad just got a Go Pole so you can take photos out in front of you. We tried it out in the seaweed filled ocean a few times.DCIM100GOPRODCIM100GOPRODCIM100GOPROProcessed with VSCOcam with f2 presetDCIM100GOPROProcessed with VSCOcam with c1 presetProcessed with VSCOcam with f2 presetThese two are so cool. Ryan was putting the camera into the water and you can see the water coming up around the camera. It happened so fast that we didn’t see it, but the photo caught the action.

We went deep sea fishing on morning with the Persons. As we had done in the past, it became and guys vs. girls competition. The ladies dominated once again!

There is just something magical about catching a huge fish! When we got back, our guides filleted them up and we took it to a restaurant that cooked it up for us. You can’t get fresher fish than that!

Ryan and I enjoyed a day to ourselves and had a date night in Seaside at the Great Southern Cafe. It was my second time there and won’t be my last. The food is so delicious! Deep Sea Fishing

8 Jan

Instead of our annual Christmas trip to Memphis, this year we headed to the beach to meet my family. It was a relaxing getaway and change of pace. The weather wasn’t cooperating like we had hoped so it was our first and last “beachmas”, but it was still jam-packed with memories and laughter.

During the prettiest day of our trip (the only one where we saw the sun), we were deep sea fishing in the gulf. We caught more fish than we bargained for, were assisted by two guys referred to as Cornbread and Tater Tot, and watched people eat bolognese with a side of Bud Light at 8:00 a.m. It was near perfect.

An 8 hour trip on the seas may have been a little long, but dinner was great that night!

Thanksgiving in Memphis

4 Dec

Last week, we celebrated Thanksgiving in Memphis. It was the first long visit we have had in about a year and didn’t disappoint!

I got to spend lots of time relaxing and hanging out around the house with everyone. Processed with VSCOcam with g3 preset

Thursday morning, we ran the Turkey Trot at Shelby Farms. It was a good way to break through the stereotypes of the holiday.

On Friday night, my mom, brothers and I went to see  John Mayer and Phillip Phillips. Half of the tickets were purchased days in advance and the other 2 were a day of decision. I got to sit in the close seats for Phil and then swapped seats for the main attraction.jmmmm

Holmes and I had a blast people watching in our section. jm2

We brainstormed ideas for the Christmas card the entire time and didn’t come up with an idea until lunch on Sunday. It ended up being a great one.christmascardI am really grateful to be a Hill. Its a blast.

Hill Family Reunion – BGKY

7 Oct

Last weekend, my family came to Bowling Green to visit. It was the first time we had all been together since Christmas last year. We went to the WKU vs. Navy game, hung out on our porch and ate great food. navyI love having everyone in our home for a couple days. Until next time!

Downtown Perks

17 Sep

Main StreetOne of my favorite things about living downtown is that we are so close to everything. We can walk to get coffee or dinner. Most of our friends live pretty close too.

I also love all the houses around our area. Most have interesting details that make them really cool to look at.

A few weeks ago, we decided to get back into running and decided to sign up for a race so we wouldn’t be able to back out. We talked several of our friends into it too and now everyone is “training”. It is really the best time to start since the weather is getting nicer every day. We are using the Couch to 10K app to coach us. I am such a fan of these apps because it builds my confidence a little every time we finish a run. Our friend Loren has been running with us the last few nights and it has reminded me how great our life is in this little town. Cheers to good weather, good friends and getting in shape!

Wish us luck!

Beach Trip #2

23 Jul

On short notice, we got the chance to go to the beach for a few days last week!

But right before we headed that way, we got to go to a Beyonce concert! It was quite a performance!! I hadn’t ever been to see someone who was more than a singer. She was amazing!

It was a great trip with beautiful weather. We were so excited to have an unexpected second trip to the beach with my brother!

One new addition that we loved was a golf cart! Holmes was our chauffeur for the trip.

Great Things Happen When My Parents Empty Their Garage Part 1

26 Jun

This past weekend, Ryan and I were in Memphis for a little visit (our first since Christmas).

We had Grayson in tow. He and I had just wrapped up a Photojournalism Workshop at WKU. It was fun to coordinate an event that he was participating in. Learn more about that here.

little ggAfter a short stop at SATCO, we were on our way.

We had a nice time enjoying my family and our hometown. There are new sites and sounds that we got to enjoy.

One was a free concert at the Levitt Shell then pizza downtown at Aldo’s. I highly recommend both!

shell1 Then Saturday night, we went to my friend Katie’s wedding at the Pink Palace. Cheers to Mr. and Mrs. Davidson!rhodes

Before I left town, my dad mentioned that there was some stuff in the garage he wanted to get rid of. As usual, we jumped on this offer!

Last summer, they got some new patio furniture and have been storing the old stuff (it is probably the same age as me) in the garage. We brought it home and gave it a facelift!

patio before patio duringpatio afterWe gave it one more coat after this one, but you get the picture.
Thank you for the kind donations, Mom and Dad.
And yes, part 2 is coming…. from Memphis right now. I am really excited about this project!
15 May

The last few months have been a whirlwind. Here is a look:

There was some crazy hail one Sunday afternoon.

I mastered homemade pesto. More to come on that!ef5776ec9bb711e2a5d322000a1f90e5_7The Talisman portrait team travelled all over campus and the state to take photos, including one of our favorite student- Big Red.

Ryan took a tumble on a long board.

Spring came and we celebrated!

We went to Churchill Downs for some horse racing!
We decided that our house looks best when the grass is green and the sky is blue.
The school year has come to a close and we are working on wrapping up the Talisman. This team did an amazing job this year and am so proud of them!
Ryan and I are hitting the road tomorrow to celebrate Holmes’ graduation from Samford. Then we are scooting down to the beach for a few days- the best way to celebrate #24!

The Big Apple

23 Mar

During Spring Break, I went to New York for a College Media Convention. Holmes had been in New York for an internship since the beginning of January so when I found out about the trip, I was so excited that he would be there during my visit, BUT I found out he was leaving a few hours before I was supposed to fly in. I rearranged my plans so I could go a day early and be there for Holmes’ last night in NYC.

Right before we met, he was offered a job after he finishes school! The rest of the night we celebrated!!! I was so happy to be there for such a happy day. We went to dinner at a swanky place called the Stanton Social. It is owned by one of the judges from a favorite show, Chopped. I highly recommend it.
1b3c0cfc883311e2afd722000a1f98d6_71e714aa88b1811e2ad1922000a1cbd31_7Since I was there a day earlier than the conference, I got the explore with my aunt Jen. We had brunch at Hundred Acres, shopped in SoHo, and walked all over the island. It was such a beautiful day!8f8709c288f111e2ab5722000a1f9684_78770b74e88ef11e2913d22000a9e2892_7

I also got to meet up with Kaycee that day. Somehow NYC turned into a small town full of people I love!1cd91b50890411e2be6b22000aa80214_7c471c2988a9b11e29a6422000a9e06c4_7 c604e2dc89b711e2a67a22000a9f3cad_7de993bb8891711e282e122000a1f9aae_7

The last night before we left Sam (the Talisman Photo Editor) and I went out with Matt (a WKU/Talisman alum) to see some more sights.

I really enjoyed seeing so much of this city this visit. If you are in New York, make sure you see the 9/11 Memorial. It was really incredible and moving to see.

Succulent Jackpot

22 Mar

Last weekend, my parents came in town for a little visit. We didn’t have set plans, but the gorgeous weather made it impossible to stay inside. We originally went to Home Depot to get bushes, but there was a whole succulent display that distracted us. My mom and I are really big fans, so we went a little crazy. The bushes were a success too, but this post is dedicated to these amazing little plants:IMG_1150 IMG_1211 IMG_1212 IMG_1285 IMG_1270 IMG_1274 IMG_1291 IMG_1213 IMG_1231 IMG_1158 IMG_1230 IMG_1232IMG_1233 They also have really funny names. This one is called Baby Toes.IMG_1153 Split Rock:IMG_1235 IMG_1236 IMG_1237 Key Lime Pie:IMG_1238 IMG_1239 IMG_1240 IMG_1241 IMG_1243 IMG_1244 IMG_1218 IMG_1245 IMG_1247 IMG_1249 IMG_1250 IMG_1251 IMG_1252 IMG_1253 IMG_1254 IMG_1255 IMG_1256 IMG_1257 IMG_1262 IMG_1265 IMG_1267Thanks to my dad and his snazzy new camera for the photos!
